Here's what happened at training camp on Friday.... HOT TOPIC: The last thing Kenny Moore wanted to see was his best friend on the football team break an arm during the offseason. But Steve Smith’s bad break could lead to a good break for Moore. With Smith on the sidelines Moore has been running with the first-team offense along with Dwayne Jarrett and has been exceptional through the first two days of camp. “It’s an opportunity for me to come in and make plays and show them that I can really do it with the starters,” said Moore, a Charlotte native who starred at Butler High. “It’s exciting for me.” Moore faces some tough competition this summer. |

Jonathan Stewart said he'll be back on the field soon. (Photo by John Clark) SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Running back Jonathan Stewart was asked Friday when was the last time he felt 100 percent healthy. Stewart rolled his eyes to the ceiling, trying to reflect on a date that seems so long ago in his mind. “It was before I played Arizona in college, my last year,” Stewart said, thinking back to the fall of 2007. “That was the last time I really felt 100 percent.” The good news is he’s getting closer. Although he began training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, Stewart said he hopes to return to practice “soon,” indicating that could come before the team breaks camp on Aug. 18. Regardless, he said he’ll be ready to play in the Sept. 12 regular season opener against the New York Giants. "My foot is getting better and the progress is on point for the season and everything, so there's nothing to worry about there," said Stewart, who underwent surgery in January to remove spurs and scar tissue around the area where the Achilles tendon attaches to the heel. |

Jon Beason talks with Steve Smith during a break in practice Thursday. (AP Photo) Here's a roundup from today's training camp practice... HOT TOPIC: The decision, it seems, has been made. After more than a month to contemplate how best to go about replacing injured WLB Thomas Davis, the Carolina Panthers opened training camp with Jon Beason working at Davis’ old spot and Dan Connor in the middle. Although the Panthers could change plans at any time, it seems they’re committed – at least right now – to moving Beason to that position while Davis tries to make a superhuman comeback from a second torn ACL torn in his right knee. Beason made it clear his preference would be to remain in the middle, but that he’s willing to do what’s best for the greater good. |

(Photo by John Clark) SPARTANBURG, S.C. – There were years, and not so long ago, where the Carolina Panthers were the chic pick to win the Super Bowl. In 2005, Sports Illustrated picked the Panthers to beat the Indianapolis Colts in the big game. The following year SI picked the Panthers to beat the Miami Dolphins. Of course neither season panned out. |

Steve Smith will open training camp on the sidelines after breaking his arm in a flag football game. (Photo by John Clark) SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Matt Moore certainly has an enormous task ahead of him as he readies to take over as the Carolina Panthers starting quarterback. The transition won’t be made any easier with his star receiver out. Steve Smith is expected to miss most of the preseason while recovering from a broken arm he sustained playing in a flag football game last month. On Wednesday, as players converged on Wofford College for the start of camp, Moore did his best to downplay the significance of missing the opportunity to develop some chemistry with Smith in practice. “As long as he is ready to go come Week 1 that is the most important thing,” Moore said. “That’s what we need to focus on. Are we going to miss some time to work? Absolutely. That’s nothing to worry about, though. Steve has been here for a long time. He is a playmaker and one of the best in the league so he’ll make an easy comeback. He and I have had a really good relationship and I’ll think well be ready to go for the season.” |
