CHARLOTTE – The preseason is about finding answers, but the reality is we’ll have to wait until the regular season to find out just how good (or how bad) Carolina’s offense really is.
Granted, the Panthers have been downright unwatchable on that side of the ball through three games but is it really a fair assessment when -- as coach John Fox readily points out -- two of the team’s top three playmakers, Steve Smith and Jonathan Stewart, haven’t played a snap in the preseason?
There’s still one game left before the real bullets fly, but we won’t know anymore after Thursday night than we know now. Fox never plays his starters more than a series or two in the preseason finale, so not much will change between now and then.
So what can we expect come Sept. 12 against the New York Giants?

   CHARLOTTE –
After three promising outings, folks around these parts are beginning to wonder if this young Carolina Panthers defense is for real.
Through three games the Panthers have limited their opponents to 10 points per game, 3 yards per play and registered a league-high 18 sacks, including seven on Saturday night against the Tennessee Titans.
Preseason or not, those are impressive numbers.
It’s been the one highlight for the Panthers in a preseason marred by inconsistent special teams play and a flailing passing game.
“It’s not that I’m surprised because we see it in practice,” cornerback Richard Marshall said of the team’s defense. “We have guys that are fast, guys that run around and guys that play with good technique. So to me it’s not a surprise. For the public it might be a surprise because a lot of people are probably thinking, wow, we didn’t know they had this.”

CHARLOTTE – The Carolina Panthers defense continues to look dominant in the preseason -- and it’s a darn good thing since their offense can’t seem to score.
Carolina sacked Vince Young four times – two of those by Charles Johnson – and limited the Titans to 50 net yards on 24 plays and no points in the opening half Saturday night at Bank of America Stadium.
Unfortunately, the offense couldn’t take advantage.
Playing again without Steve Smith and Jonathan Stewart, the Panthers failed to score in the first half as well as they continue to look for consistency in the passing game.

Mike Goodson

   CHARLOTTE --
Mike Goodson is loaded with talent.
The problem for the Carolina Panthers – if you want to call it a problem – is they’re loaded at running back, which makes getting the explosive Goodson on the football field a little difficult.
The 2009 third-round draft pick out of Texas A&M is buried on the depth chart behind last year’s "Double Trouble" tandem of 1,100-yard rushers DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, again putting him in a position to compete for scraps in the backfield with third-down back Tyrell Sutton.
“It’s hard. I mean, I can’t lie, man,” Goodson said. “But just knowing how good those guys are, you can’t take anything from them. DeAngelo can go and Stew can go. They’re tough to stop. We have those guys and obviously they’re going to take up a lot of time in the game.

Moore

Here are five things to watch in Saturday night's game...

1. The passing game. The Panthers are completing just 42 percent of their passes and haven’t looking impressive moving the ball through the air. Matt Moore and the rest of the starters are expected to play into the third quarter against Tennessee, their most extensive playing time of the preseason. So this is a good chance for the team to get some momentum heading into the regular season.
